5 most Overrated movies of 2014
20/May 5 most Overrated movies of 2014

I watched almost every single trailer of every mainstream movie that was to be released and I have to commend the producers for making the trailers seem so fascinating and perfect. However, when I really got around to watching a couple of these movies, I could not help hide my disappointment.

1) POMPEII

IMDb rating: 5.7/10
Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama
Cast: Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland
Review: I was so impressed with the trailer, because it had both an element of drama and outstanding visuals. With a personal interest in the history of how ancient civilizations were washed away, my first reaction to the trailer was over-expectations from the movie itself. However, when I actually watched the movie, I was a bit disappointed. Emily Browning has had a promising career with hits like Sucker Punch, Magic Mike, and Sleeping Beauty. Kit who gained massive popularity because of his role of Jon Snow in the HBO TV series Games of Throne was also a strong point. The movie was too predictable, the plot was weak, and the scenes proceeded too slowly.

2) JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT

IMDb rating: 6.2/10
Genre: Action, Mystery, Thriller
Cast: Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley
Review: Another movie I personally found overrated was Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The strong points were that the cast was too strong and so was the filming crew. The trailer was promising and so were all the pre-release reviews and press conferences. Talking about the movie, Keira’s character seemed more of a supporting role than the lead actor. The movie lacked the element of uniqueness; it was just like any other crime movie based on CIA and terrorism. Over all, it was a good action packed film but I personally feel that the loyal fans were expecting a little more mystery and uniqueness from the producers.

3) I FRANKENSTEIN

IMDb rating: 5.2/10
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Sci-fi
Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto
Review: I am a huge Aaron Echkart fan and he was one of the two reasons why I watched this movie. The other reason was that I was always had a keen interest for fictional characters like Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster. The movie had amazing visual effects and the casting was good as well. The plot was unique because of the whole concept of demons descending and gargoyles ascending. What seemed off about the movie was that the beginning was too slow and dry. Despite being an action film, the only good fight occurred in the last 20 minutes or so. the ending was incomplete and left me with a dozen unanswered questions.
4) GODZILLA

IMDb rating: 7.1/10
Genre: Action, Sci-fi, Thriller
Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan
Review: Probably the most overrated movie of 2014 was Godzilla. Even with a brilliant casting, filming and visual effects the movie could not fully deliver what it promised its fans. I for one stayed confused during the entire movie. There was too much chaos and with an initial slow beginning, the producers had to face the dilemma of wrapping it up quickly. The plot? I wonder if there even was one. All I saw during the one and a half hour movie was three confused terrestrial giants fighting over God knows what. Elizabeth Olsen hardly came on screen for mere 10 minutes or so. The lead actor Aaron had absolutely no lead role in the movie. I went into the theatre all excited and came out all confused and disappointed.

5) NON-STOP

IMDb rating: 7.1/10
Genre: Action, Mystery, Thriller
Cast: Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, Scoot McNairy
Review: I am sure majority of the readers here are loyal fans of Liam Neeson who has his career full of blockbusters. I myself am a huge fan however, I found his recent gig a tad bit overrated.
The cast was strong and all the actors delivered pretty well on the screen. The plot however was weak and predictable too. Non-stop was like any other Hollywood movie with the typical storyline where an obsessed hero tries to save a plane from blowing up in the air. There was nothing new, and I for one was not thrilled at all. The movie lacked spirit and action.
